My theroy on the glyphs found in Halo 3 ODST (and going on a live stream easter egg hunt to test it)
Hello everyone,
I want to share my own theory about Halo 3's ODST mysterious glyphs.
Basically, I think the glyphs are a way for engineers to communicate without being spied by the Covenant. They use these glyphs to organize their resistance against the Covenant, by marking useful resources, documenting where the Superintendent is, etc.
Notably, I want to give another go to the theory that the "empty" Y signs indicate mourning. I think it was rejected too fast.
My reasoning comes from the following elements that we know about the glyphs:
- The glyphs are written by the engineers.
- The engineers need to communicate secretly, as standard data transfers are surely regulated by the Covenant, and glyphs are invisible through normal means
- A Halo developer has apparently said that the glyphs were telling a story, with the Y being similar to Forerunner ships. However, we also know that not every glyph can be related to the Forerunners, as many of the glyphs depict the SuperIntendant, which has nothing to do with the Forerunners.
- The "big circle" glyph is depicting a halo, according to the file names (info taken from RocketSloth's subreddit).
- All "empty" Y signs, except the ones found around the "halo" glyph, are found near deat elites.
I'm going to make an easter egg hunt in New Mombasa on a live stream tomorrow, in order to confront this theory to what I found in-game. If you're interested to join, it will be on this channel on this Friday, at 18:00 UTC:
