I designed a cabinet based on the emotional weight of Spirited Away and nobody noticed the details. Here's what I hid in it.
Working on a bedroom project where the client said they loved Spirited Away and wanted it as inspiration. Most people would do lanterns and shoji screens.
I went a different direction. I asked what the film actually feels like emotionally and designed around that.
The cabinet sits in the darkest zone of the room the part meant to evoke the chaos and disorientation Chihiro feels when she first arrives. So everything about it had to carry weight.
The curves of the body were traced from Haku's movement as a dragon. Fluid, never forced, always mid-motion.
The drawer pulls are brass pig heads. Chihiro's parents, frozen in the moment they lost themselves. Most people who've seen the room haven't noticed them yet.
Dark walnut for the body because that zone needed to feel heavy. Deep purple dividers for tension. Calacatta marble on top because even in the darkest chapter something precious survives.
None of these were aesthetic decisions. Every single one was emotional.
Curious if anyone else designs this way or if this is just how my brain works.
