Connecticut Near Miss Experience

Ok so I live in Connecticut and I completely did something stupid. While driving down on the main road (Its a road going one way and another road going the other way with each side having a shoulder) there was a car in-front of me and they was slowing down to make a turn. They singled a little bit late so i thought they were turning left instead of right. And so like everyone else who lives in my area takes the shoulder to pass the car. We almost end up hitting but I narrowly escaped and did no damage to the other car. I just want to know what could happen if they end up calling the police. What could happen and any fines or punishment.
