Update - don’t worry everyone it was worth it
Direct quote from her today
"'What is the meaning of this voyage to New York? What kind of sordid business are you on now? I mean, man, whither goest thou? Whither goest thou, America, in thy shiny car in the night?'" - Jack Kerouac
Well, she made it - to New York at least. But the fog was getting scary bad and it was almost 1am, so Chris had been awake for over 36 hours. At this point, there was no way he was making it to work in the morning and as much as we needed him to, we needed to be safe much more. So we decided to pull into the Love’s just a few minutes over the state line and figured we would sleep for a few hours. We’re scared to run the furnace before we get a carbon monoxide detector, so we bundled up, coats and all, then crawled into bed. The next thing we knew, we were waking up at NOON! We slept for nearly 12 hours.
So we got up, cleaned up the RV, grabbed drinks and some cantaloupe, and thought all we had to do was gas up one last time and get back on the road. We would be seeing our babies in three hours. And then the universe laughed and laughed.
First, Chris ran the debit card at the gas pump, which puts an automatic $120 hold on it and we only had $127 in there to begin with. Well, he had only pumped .21 cents worth of gas when he realized he was pumping the expensive gas. He stopped and tried to switch but had to cancel the transaction - buttt they said it would take 12-24 hours. Luckily, I had $100 on PayPal that I was leaving as an emergency fund. So we used that to fill up, crossed our fingers that we wouldn’t have another need for an emergency fund between here and Syracuse, and hit the road. We made it maybe 10 minutes before we had an issue and had to pull over. I cried, and I have been pretty good almost the entire time about staying positive but this damn near broke me. Chris kept calm, cool, and collected though, and got to work trying his best to figure it out. Two hours later, we are back on the road, and I’m high fiving his pitch black hands. His smile is beaming, and mine is too. This man of mine, with no experience in mechanics/automotives and certainly none with RVs, has gotten us back on the road twice now - all on his own. I couldn’t be more proud. I wish my Grampa could see him. 🥹🧡
It’s been EIGHT DAYS, 10 states, 5000 miles, one car wreck, two roadside repair stops, a few tears, a little help from our friends, a lot of great music, and every single dollar we had to our names and then some, and now we just have to make it 200 more miles - our babies are waiting for us on the other end. And it was all for a home that nobody can take from us, but that can take us everywhere. Worth it? I think so. 🫶🏼
What a long strange trip it has been, indeed. 🛣️✨”
