Inner and outer oil seal. 1st gen, rear axles

I am currently working my 2002 AC rear axles. I see there is an inner oil seal that goes in the diff housing that keeps the oil inside the housing. There is a second seal thay goes beetween the axle and the bearing carrier. What is the function of this second seal?
