Registering a car at my parents' address
I'm looking at buying a TDI that appears to have hit a pothole. I live in the Colorado emissions area, but my parents live in rural Colorado outside of it. How hard would it be to register my car at their address without going to jail or being kicked off my insurance for a false address or insurance fraud?
At my present address, I currently already have a couple other vehicles (emissions-compliant) registered and insured, my driver's license, a registered business, and a lease and renter's insurance policy.
My home area is full of Flock ALPR cameras.
I've had a couple ideas, including:
- Registering and insuring at my parents' address, including them as drivers on the policy, and saying I bought the car for them if asked. But the ALPRs in my area make me more concerned about that than I might otherwise be
- Insuring the car at my parents' address and presenting that at my parents' DMV to register, then updating the insurance address to mine after registration
- Registering and insuring the car at my parents' address and leaving it to sit there for now (100% legal and honest) and moving to a non-emissions area when my lease is up. A little extreme to do for a car, but I'm only renting and there are non-emissions areas as far away from my work as my current home.
- Finding a shop that'll pass my emissions inspection, but I don't think there are any. It subjects them to legal trouble and diesel inspections are annual
