Chance me UC Employee Applying for UC Berkeley Mechanical Engineering (CCC transfer, 3.75 GPA)
Stats:
- California community college transfer (third year)
- GPA: 3.75 overall
- No grades below a B
- First-generation college student
- Documented disability with formal accommodations (recognized at three institutions, including Berkeley DSP)
- All required prerequisites complete or in progress
- Taking multiple strongly recommended courses this semester
- Currently cross-enrolled at UC Berkeley for major coursework (with instructor approval)
ECs:
- Work for the UC system in an office role (prior to being admitted as a student)
- Founder & President of the engineering club at my CC
- Member and committee work in a UC Berkeley student org
- NASA NCAS Scholars Program (had a program management role during it which I mentioned specifically for this EC)
- Math/science tutor (CC level + private)
- Former marketing/content producer at a startup (intern to paid role)
- Other work experience (barista, etc.)
- Started doing research at my school (mentioned in academic updates, not on original app)
PIQs:
- Working for the UC system and what it taught me about initiative and access
- My disability and how I built systems to manage it academically
- Founding the engineering club and building resources for CC students
- My path into engineering / major prep
Applied to:
- UC Berkeley - Mechanical Engineering (first choice)
- UC Irvine - Mechanical Engineering
- UC San Diego - Mechanical Engineering
- UC Santa Cruz - Computer Engineering
- (UC Davis ME already rejected - missing CHEM 1B)
Concerns:
- GPA feels low compared to recent Berkeley ME admits (seeing a lot of 3.9 - 4.0 for 2025 via Transfer by Major, was formerly a lot more flexible at around 3.79 to 4.00 in 2024)
- A lot of my B’s are from older humanities classes not related to my major
- Some requirements were still listed as “in progress” when I applied
Main question:
Do I realistically have a shot at Berkeley ME with a 3.75?
And does my background (first-gen, working, documented disability with accommodations, etc.) actually help offset my GPA in their evaluation, or is GPA still the main deciding factor that could hold me back, especially for a highly competitive major like Mechanical Engineering?
Appreciate any honest feedback.
