Is it normal to have to chase your mechanic for updates?

Hey,

Dropped my BMW F34 off at a shop a few days ago to have the transfer case and one axle replaced. They said it might take a bit since the transfer case is being reconditioned.

But I’ve had to call every single time just to get any kind of update, they never reach out first.

Feels kinda weird having to chase them just to know what’s going on with my own car.

Is this normal now or is this just a bad shop?

How do your guys’ shops usually handle this?
