Your demo worked perfectly. The model handled 20 edge cases flawlessly. You shipped it.

Then at 2am, your on-call fires. The agent wrapped a number in quotes. One field. One type error. Your downstream system - which trusted the model completely - collapsed.

The model worked fine. Your system didn't.

𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞'𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐀𝐈 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐬 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐰𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠: they treat the LLM as a reliable software component. It's not. It's a probabilistic engine - capable of producing output that looks valid but breaks your system. You wouldn't wire raw voltage into your laptop. You'd use a regulator, a fuse, a harness.

That's the gap.

𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 isn't prompt tuning or model selection. It's the discipline of building a deterministic wrapper around a probabilistic engine. Not making the model smarter - reducing the space in which it can be wrong.

The real systems engineering work happens in the layer between your LLM and production. Most teams skip it entirely. That's where reliability breaks.
