Has anyone else been on a healing journey and realized you're trying to heal in an ableist way?
This is quite a nuanced, complex topic and I'm realizing how deep it goes.
For context: I've been on a healing journey and path for probably 5 years or more of dedicated healing with healing modalities etc...I was diagnosed with autism 2 years ago. and I've recently struck on a realization that to me explains a lot of why my nervous system and my body still feels stuck, even after so much internal shifting.
I think it has to do with the foundations of healing practices being 'miracle' oriented and 'pushing through barriers' and 'breaking glass ceilings' oriented in their language. I'm realizing now that while my my mind enjoys those concepts, my autistic nervous system gets overwhelmed by them quite easily, and they end up feeling out reach, but I still end up pushing for them. I'm back in a phase of cyclical burnout and questioning how I can tune into and honor my nervous system needs adequately.
What was supposed to be 'life-changing' about healing, accidentally became ableist. Of course, the intention is wonderful, but for an autistic nervous system, sometimes the real miracle is living from a place of gentle self-acceptance. That's the place I'm 'striving' for now, and I'm using the healing modalities to heal from the effects and imprints of internalized ableism. Being more gentle with myself and tuning into what real miracles would be for me, like taking care of my sensory needs everyday, managing a stable part-time income and living at peace with myself.
