Gf has a bad loan

so 6 years ago my gf was getting out of a abusive marriage and needing money to start over. she took out a loan on her var that was previously paid off. after 6 years this loan has not gone down at all due to the high daily interest. we're pondering the idea of stopping payment of the loan and letting the car get repossessed. she owes 12k on the loan and car is worth 3k. does anyone have any better ideas on how she can get out of this mess. thanks
