Can a toxic work environment be classified as a "safety hazard" under Australian law?
I’m asking this because a former colleague of mine is currently on stress leave, and their HR department is being incredibly vague about the return to work process. The workplace has become a total pressure cooker unrealistic KPIs, constant overtime, and zero support. It’s reached a point where it’s not just office drama anymore, it’s a genuine mental health crisis for the whole team. From what I understand a workplace safety consultant can actually be brought in specifically to manage these psychosocial risks. Apparently, it’s not just about hard hats and yellow vests anymore, employers in Australia are now legally required to manage stress and burnout as actual safety hazards. I think my colleague’s firm is completely failing this requirement.
I’m curious if it’s worth suggesting this to the higher-ups as a way to avoid a massive WorkCover claim.
