Student who is going back home for work during the summer - what should I/do I need to do with my apartment before I leave?
For context, I'm a grad student, living solo in a pretty small studio apartment. Before anyone mentions subletting I did consider it, however there's a possibility I might end up coming back to Ottawa early so I can't commit to subletting for the full four months. Also, my building includes electricity, water, and heating/central AC as part of the lease, and there's no in-unit laundry but I do have a dishwasher.
I've been doing some googling about what to do, and my plan thus far is to:
-
Get a friend to pop in ~once a week, check my mail (and forward me anything that's important, although I barely get anything relevant besides ads these days), make sure there's nothing obviously wrong in my unit
-
Set my AC to ~21 degrees
-
Unplug electronics (TV, lamp, alarm clock, air fryer) so there's no chance of a short there
-
Get rid of all the non-perishable food, clean fridge, empty freezer just in case, make sure fridge/freezer are closed. Not going to turn them off because it's not like I pay extra to keep them on.
-
take out/clean my garbage and recycling bins
-
run a cleaning cycle in my dishwasher before leaving
-
do a general clean of my place
-
Make sure my windows/balcony door are closed up tight. Look for any potential gaps and cover them with something to ensure no bugs can get in
-
set up a couple bug traps as insurance
From what I've read online, the main question that remains is what is the best practice for my drains (I have 2 sinks, a toilet, and my bathtub/shower), to ensure no gasses or pests come up the pipes: would it be better to turn off the water to my unit and plug them, or to have my friend just flush the toilet and run the taps/shower for a bit when he comes in?
Is there anything else I need to do?
