AITK for wanting to hang out with my friend despite my dad’s reaction?
I (20F) am a college student and currently financially dependent on my parents. I live in a PG and my dad pays for it. For context, my dad also gets notified of every transaction I make on GPay (even small ones) and he often questions me about where I spent money—whether it’s ₹10 or ₹500+. It already feels a bit restrictive, but I’ve mostly just dealt with it. Recently, for the first time in two years, I made a plan to go out (just a movie) with this college friend. We’re not extremely close but we get along well and it was a normal, casual outing. I have reshared stories she posted before and I think my dad has noticed that before but said nothing because he got to hear nothing about me going out with her.
When I texted in the family group telling that I'm going to watch a movie with her(only first name), he started asking me questions like what her full name is, who she is, etc. When he found out she’s Muslim(my sister screamed the friend's name on a video call later), he reacted very negatively. He started bringing up stereotypes like she might bring her brother along, they marry their own cousins, they are not good people and even told me to never go out with her again.
For context, my friend is completely normal. She doesn’t even have male friends, doesn’t discuss religion and most of her school friends are from different backgrounds. There’s genuinely nothing problematic about her. I told my dad all this but he didn't budge. What upset me more was that my dad then said things like “you’re not going again, I’ve told you,” and implied that if I didn’t listen, he might stop paying my PG rent. It felt like a threat. He is this sort of a person who lowkey blackmails and is controlling.
I feel really frustrated because I didn’t do anything wrong. I just went out with a friend. I feel like I’m being judged and controlled and I don’t like that my friendships are being dictated based on religion. At the same time, I am financially dependent on him, so I'm obviously stuck. I also feelo AITK for wanting to still hang out with my friend and feeling like my dad is being unfair/controlling?
