I Dont really understand what just happened?

So this is kind of a long story, but I really need some outside perspective.

Last year, a new guy joined our school and I was the first person to talk to him. He was really shy at first. The next day, he found my number from the school WhatsApp group and texted me asking for the textbook, and we ended up talking the whole day. After that, we became pretty good friends.

We didn’t talk that much in school, but we texted a lot. Sometimes he would send slightly flirty messages, but I didn’t really take them seriously or respond to them much.

At one point, he told me he had “mixed feelings” for me, and I said I did too (I wasn’t fully sure, but I didn’t want to shut it down either). But after that, we never really brought it up again. Instead, he started calling me his best friend and even his sister, which made me assume he didn’t see me that way anymore.

He would constantly talk to me about other girls, his crushes, girls he was texting, even girlfriends, and ask me for advice. He also kind of bragged about getting a lot of girls. So I just assumed he didn’t actually like me like that.

Also, he made some comments about my weight a couple of times, like saying I’d look better if I lost weight, which I didn't really care about but then again it didn't sit right w me

Then yesterday (April 1st), he sent me a screenshot of some girl he was texting and after an hour or so he suddenly told me he realized he has feelings for me. This really confused me because of everything before. I didn't rlly believe him at first and said he was just bored,he assured me he wasn't.After that, I asked him what he expected, like does he actually want a relationship? He told me he does.

The thing is, we’re from different religions, and realistically my parents would never allow it. So I told him it wouldn’t work out for me also becuz of the fact that he was legit texting another girl like right before this

I called him out for it and he said that was just his friend and that he wld really commit if I said yes.I asked him if he saw it going somewhere and he said yes, i said no.

Then he suddenly said “April Fools"

I asked him if he actually meant it or not, and he said he did have feelings, but now there’s no point because I already said no.

After that, I asked if we could still be friends, and he said no because it would be awkward and that I don’t have feelings for him anyway.

Now he’s completely avoiding me at school.

I genuinely don’t understand what just happened. If he liked me this whole time, why was he calling me his sister and talking about other girls? Why say it on April Fool’s? And why cut me off completely?

Was he actually serious, or was this some kind of game?

I’d really appreciate any honest opinions.
