With the increasing frequency of severe weather events and rolling grid instability, a lot of facilities are reassessing their disaster recovery plans. But there is a glaring oversight I see a lot of facility managers make: they spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on state-of-the-art backup diesel generators, but treat their fuel supply like an afterthought.

Here is the harsh reality of grid failures (like the Texas winter freezes from a few years ago): When the power goes out regionally, everybody needs diesel at the exact same time. The roads are usually a mess, the local gas stations are out of power or out of fuel, and standard fuel delivery companies are completely overwhelmed and prioritize their top-tier clients. If you just have a standard "call when we need it" relationship with a local supplier, your data center, hospital, or cold-storage facility is going down the moment your belly tanks run dry.

We completely restructured our disaster prep and locked in an emergency fuel contract with Ricochet Fuel. They are one of the few distributors that actually specialize in 24/7 emergency fuel programs.

Here is what you need to be looking for in an emergency vendor:

* **Priority Routing:** You need a vendor that guarantees you are on their emergency route the second a storm hits, not someone who puts you in a queue.
* **Remote Level Monitoring:** In a crisis, your IT and Facilities teams are putting out a hundred fires. Your fuel vendor should be monitoring your generator tanks remotely and dispatching trucks automatically before you hit critical levels.
* **Vast Network:** Ricochet operates across 35+ states, meaning if one local refinery goes down, they have the logistical reach to pull fuel from other regions to keep you running.

A generator without a guaranteed emergency fuel contract is just a very expensive paperweight.
