Student Loans Rant
This won’t apply to everyone, but it’s something that has irritated me for a while:
I’m Welsh, going to study in London on a 6 year course. This means a few things:
-
my total loan will be £150k (maintenance+tuition)
-
my stupid govt decided to stay on plan 2 loans, so I’ll be entering my profession with a repayment of 9%, and interest of rpi+3%
When starting ill have a salary of around £36k as an fy1, which means straight away I’ll be paying that 9%, to work long hours, overnights and to pay off an effective tax rate of almost 50% when I reach specialty training, which is insane, and even at that tax rate, I won’t be paying off the student loan in time, just due to its enormous size. So essentially, for 30 working years I’ll be paying a huge chunk of my salary. Usually, I don’t mind taxation, because it funds public services, but the money I pay back, will go to subsiding degrees that won’t lead to a high paying job, like humanities or the arts (not to hate on people who study those degrees), but they essentially study for free as they may never meet the repayment threshold.
And the govt wonders why doctors leave to Australia and Canada, when the system shafts them at every turn, don’t even get me started on competition ratios or the chronic understaffing of the nhs
Thanks for letting me rant, lmk if any relate :)
