Does email warming make sense for newsletters?

Gmail and other ESPs are smart. A service that warms an inbox by sending from and opening and responding to itself (with different domains hopefully) doesn't mirror mostly outbound only newsletters. Do Gmail and others tell the difference and if so, is warming ineffective at best and at worst subject to penalization by the ESPs? I use Warmy atm for our sending domain, but considering canceling so I am looking for anyone who can speak from experience about this.
