my homophobic mom is meeting my girlfriend
So my (f21) girlfriend (f19) is meeting my mom next weekend. We’ve been together for over a year now and my mom has known about her since before we started dating. I grew up kind of casually religious but in high school my mom got very into christianity and far right politics. She never said anything outright homophobic and had coworkers who were gay that she considered friends.
I knew that when I told her I was dating a girl it wouldn’t be her favorite thing to hear, but i thought it would go okay. When I told her, she was devastated and we argued for months on end. She’d send me reels and articles about a woman who had “overcome the devil’s temptations” of being with a woman and now shes married to a man with 4 kids and shes a christian activist.
I would re-explain every time that nothing would change no matter how many reels or books or documentaries or articles she sent me, i would still be gay. Eventually this stopped, and when I thought things were getting better I asked her to meet my gf. She said no until I came out to the rest of our family.
I was terrified to do so for so long because I thought they were all going to have the same or worse reactions than my mom. I’ve only just now completely come out to my mom’s side of the family, and she’s agreed to meet my girlfriend.
I’m so so nervous and I don’t want her to say anything hurtful to my girlfriend and I truly dont know what to expect. Does anyone have any like words of wisdom or suggestions or own personal experiences where this went well? I just keep seeing horror stories all over the internet and its just worsening my anxieties.
