I almost used the same exit survey everywhere. bad idea.
Day 3 building in public.
Yesterday I added exit feedback to MeetDone.
Today I realized something pretty fast:
one generic exit question for every page would've been useless.
Someone leaving:
- the landing page
- signup
- a generated draft
- the upgrade screen
is not having the same problem.
If I ask all of them:
"why are you leaving?"
I get noise.
So I started matching the question to the moment.
Examples:
Landing page:
"What stopped you from trying MeetDone today?"
Generated draft:
"What stopped you from using this draft?"
Upgrade screen:
"What stopped you from upgrading today?"
Same user action.
Totally diff signal.
A signup bounce might mean:
- too much setup
- wanted to see output first
- trust issue
A generated-draft bounce is more like:
- tone was off
- missing details
- needed too much editing
If I mix those together, I’m basically hiding the real problem from myself.
Feels obvious in hindsight.
Didn’t feel obvious while building it.
Starting to think a lot of feedback gets ruined by asking the right question in the wrong place.
How do you handle this in your product?
- one generic survey everywhere
- context-specific questions
- no surveys, just calls/analytics
