Where should i start with learning metal?

I have played guitar on and off for most of my life, usually it goes, i pick up the guitar, learn a riff or 2 from tabs, play those riffs over and over into the ground, then stop playing and forget mostly everything i learned. The last time i started playing was over a year ago, and i was dabbling a bit with music theory. I have a brand new ibanez rgrt421 on the way, and was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction to learn guitar a bit more properly i guess. I absolutely love metalcore, and i am hoping to be able to play some, and even learn to make my own music perhaps. But since most metalcore and adjacent genres seem to use guitars that are setup for thicker strings and such, i figured i could start simple and jist try some 80s/90s hairband metal. Anyway this post is already scattered, but anyone have any good resources i could use to assist in my journey?
