What's more important: Customization or Identification?

DISCUSSION

On the topic of StarWear, crafting, and soft classes, is it more important for the individual player to have more customization of their appearance, or does being able to quickly and easily identify an enemy and their abilities matter more?

As far as I know, WoW was the game to really popularize the 'transmog' system, even if they may not have been the first to do it. Now we see it in a ton of games. I'm of the mindset that PVE games should have transmog but PvP games should have easy identification.

Look at competitive hero shooters, MOBAs, and even the fighter level meta in SC. You can usually tell exactly what something can do just by visually identifying it. You know the amount of damage or tools in their kit and you can play around that.

But, look at PvE shooters like Warframe and Deep Rock where you don't need to visually identify your teammate like you would an enemy, so they have fairly deep customization tools. Players will spend hours outside of missions and tinker with their customizations.

Specifically with crafting, do you think we should be able to 'pull off' abilities and traits that would define a class and move it to another armor? For example, would you want to be able to pull off the 'stealth' trait from Geist armors and put that on a MacFlex set? And, how far would you let that go?

I'm of the mind that if CIG leans into the customization and transmog system that they should appeal more strongly to the PvE player and but if they keep things as is then PvP becomes a much more strategic endeavor rather than "I'm going to pilot this class and this kit the same way every time and my winrate will be over 50%" while still allowing for a ton of customizations.
