Location: Ohio. Will civil commitments for psychiatric care come up on background checks for nursing licensure?
Location: Ohio
My friend wants to go into nursing pretty badly but has had two civil commitments- court ordered inpatient psychiatric care. This is in Ohio. She does not currently receive any counseling or psychiatric care, and is not medicated. She is actually doing really well- just working and living a “normal” life. She mentioned to me that the Ohio board of nursing asks applicants for licensure if they have any history of mental illness/hospitalizations - and that she’s thinking of not disclosing the information when asked on their application. I tried explaining to her that they might discover this on a background check but I’m actually not entirely sure of that myself with hipaa laws and such. Anyone here have any advice? Would hate to see my friend get through schooling only to be denied a license for the psychiatric history. Thank you so much for the input!
