Tom's simple storage issues

I have tried just about every combination of connecting two inventories together and nothing seems to work, i have a hollowed out chunk and I'm trying to connect the top and bottom together. I have tried trims, cables, proxies, nothing seems to work? the farthest i got was it detecting one double chest but not any of the others. Apologies in advance if this is a really stupid question.
