Parcel damaged during delivery complan to seller/eBay or Royal mail?

Hello,

Question of behalf of a friend. He ordered a statue that was £110 on eBay advertised as new. it was a private seller not a business.

Ebay simple delivery was used but royal mail delivered it. seller informed me friend on Tuesday he had dropped package off at local post office. Yesterday the packaged arrived. It looked like it had been crushed. Can't fault the seller it was a box within a box and with packaging chips.

The statue was fine except for the item the statue holds in its hand (sword) the top of the sword is broken off.

Who would he be best to complain about this to? The seller is away until Tuesday friend knew about this once the item got sent. Seems unfair to demand a return from the seller and ask for money back as it was not his fault he did a really good job as packing. It was royal mail who damaged it looks like one of their red vans ran over it lol. Can my friend complain to royal mail about this?
