Can the owners ask us to vacate?
My friend and I live in an apartment and our lease ends in May. Since we had a really bad experience with our previous owners who made heavy deductions from our deposit for no reason, we don’t fully trust that we’ll get our deposit back this time. So we decided to tell our current owner to adjust our 2 months rent from the security deposit. (We made up a story but they obviously didn’t seem convinced)
They reacted pretty badly and are now asking us to vacate the apartment within a week. What makes this more frustrating is that our previous flatmate didn’t pay the rent for the last two months before leaving, and the owners tried to recover that amount from us, even though we had paid our share. That whole situation has made us even more wary about how they’ll handle our deposit.
Given all this, can they legally ask us to vacate on such short notice, considering we have always paid the rent on time all this while? Also, what options do we have in this situation?
