Support for substitute teacher for an autistic child

Early Diagnosis (8yrs or younger)

Im a substitute teacher and I covered for a class for 1 week. Ive worked with all these students before.

This week was very hard for me because I found myself taking their pain home with me which only limited my ability to maintain perspective

There were many moments where this child would come to me for support about social conflict and I did my best to validate his feelings because they are very real and he doesn’t have many tools to process. I can intervene and make them be included but without constant intervention the child is still rejected which adds to the pain

I wonder if folks could recommend readings or techniques that I can try in those situations.

I know Im just a substitute teacher but Im at this school often enough that I really care about what Im doing and Im a known person at this school

I know it’s not really my job and I cant solve the deeper problems happening as someone who isn’t always around but Im typically the only adult in the room or the person the student comes to for support when Im there.
