PSA: The June 2026 "Username" update is great for privacy, but risky for your business contacts. Here’s why.
Hi everyone,
Like many of you, I’m excited about the June 2026 Privacy Update. Being able to chat via usernames without sharing my personal phone number is a huge win for privacy.
However, after digging into the technical side of this update, I realized there is a "Visibility Gap" that is going to hit a lot of us who use WhatsApp for work or managing communities.
The Problem: The "Username Reset" Right now, a phone number is permanent. In June, when people start using usernames, they can change or delete them. If a lead or a customer messages you via their handle and then changes it, your link to that person is effectively broken. You lose the "Source of Truth."
The Anti-Scam Crackdown WhatsApp is also getting much stricter with Hardware-ID (IMEI) blocking to stop scammers. This is great, but it means if you use "cloud-based" automation tools that sync your data to third-party servers, your account is at a much higher risk of being flagged by their new security AI.
How to Protect Your Contacts (The "Local" Way) Because WhatsApp doesn't store your messages or contact history on their servers (it’s all on your phone/laptop), once a contact is gone or a handle is changed, it’s gone for good.
I’ve been working on a small project called WaVault to solve this. I wanted a way to keep my contacts safe without ever letting my data leave my computer.
- It’s a "Local Vault": It keeps a persistent record of your contacts on your own laptop. If someone changes their username in June, your vault remembers who they were.
- 100% Offline: It doesn’t "talk" to the internet. It does all the work (even the Excel exports) right inside your browser. No cloud, no risk of hardware bans.
- Group History: It tracks who joins and leaves your groups so you have a "History Book" that WhatsApp doesn't provide.
I’m currently at 276 users and looking for feedback from people who manage large groups or business lists. I’m not a big company—just a developer trying to build a tool that respects the "Zero-Knowledge" rule of privacy.
If you want to try it out before the June rollout, I’d love to hear what features you actually need.
