Semester abroad in Hanoi (HUST) – tips on living, housing & budget?
Hi guys :-)
I’m planning to spend a semester abroad at HUST in Hanoi from August 2026 to February 2027.
I really enjoy traveling, meeting new people and experiencing different cultures. Growing up in Germany with Turkish roots, I’ve always felt connected to different ways of life – which is also why I love seeing how people live in other countries.
Since I’ll be staying in Hanoi for a longer period (together with a friend), I’d really appreciate some advice from people who know the city:
- What are general do’s and don’ts in Hanoi / Vietnam?
- What’s the best way to find accommodation? Is Facebook still the main platform or are there better alternatives?
- Which districts would you recommend for students? And what are typical rents for simple apartments?
- How would you describe the general attitude of locals towards foreigners/students?
- Is a budget of around 800€ per month enough for a student lifestyle (no luxury, but still going out occasionally)?
- Roughly how much should I expect to spend on food and drinks per month?
Any additional tips or things I should be aware of are very welcome.
Thanks a lot in advance guys :)
