Bridal Makeup Trial - independent or through service

I booked an expensive makeup company to do my hair and makeup for my big day and already paid a nonrefundable deposit.

Originally I asked for the owner, as she was why I chose the company in the first place, but was pushed onto another artist (they refuse to share her name or portfolio, even though I asked, they just say refer to our website for our quality of work, we only enlist the best, etc etc).

I was always on the fence about doing a makeup trial as it’s $400, however just inquired about it anyways.

They sent me a message saying that if I want a trial to do it at the assigned artist’s salon.

Looked up the salon and the HMUA has her own business and only charges $95 for a trial…. Not to mention that booking bridal HMUA directly and not through a company is 50% cheaper.

All in all, I know it’s my own fault for using a company as there is a surcharge for their logistics, but I did not expect the surcharge to be so high.

Now I’m just trying to save some costs and need to ask is it really underhand to book directly with the artist for the trial only to save myself $300?
