Help with Local Coop

Me and my partner tried playing split screen. I'm using the keyboard and mouse while she uses the controller. The next time we try to boot up the game, it won't let her join local coop now with the controller. So what happens is on one character, two people can play them with both the keyboard+mouse AND the controller. Is there any way to fix this?
