thoughts on oval chainring?

i currently have 38t round chainring on my mtb. i’m planning to change it to 38t oval. does oval chainring really helps on uphill or flats? i’ve also read that their rear derailleur stretches because of the oval shaped chainring. is oval chainring bad for the rd? lemme know your thoughts.
