Should I upgrade from a 15–20 year old Sony eReader to a modern Kindle Basic?

Buying Advice

Hey everyone,

I’ve been using an old Sony eReader for around 15–20 years now, and it still works perfectly fine for reading. At the end of the day, it displays text, and that’s what an e-reader is supposed to do.

However, I’m considering upgrading to a Amazon Kindle (11th generation), mainly because of the built-in front light and dark mode. My current device only has a small external light attached to the case, which is honestly pretty inconvenient.

So I’m wondering:

  • Is the upgrade actually worth it if my current device still works?
  • Does the front light and dark mode make a big difference in real usage (especially at night)?
  • Is the screen quality noticeably better compared to really old e-readers?

Also, if I do upgrade — what accessories would you consider “must-have” from day one?

I’m thinking about:

  • A case (probably mandatory)
  • Maybe a screen protector? Not sure if that’s overkill on e-ink

Would appreciate honest opinions, especially from people who upgraded from older devices.
