Names you're surprised aren't more popular, in the charts or for you personally!
What are some names you can't believe aren't higher in the charts? What about names you should in theory love, except you just don't like them and can't figure out why? Don't be afraid to give long explanations - I love a good name discussion!
Here are some of mine for these categories...
*Surprised aren't more popular:*
- **Ellen** - A beautiful, simple girls name that deserves some love along with all the other El- girls names!
- **Elmo** - Okay. I know why this one isn't used but it's so sweet and definitely deserves a return! The only way to shake the association is to give it to more little human boys!
- **Enid** - A lovely, short and sweet, 'vintage' name that would be so precious on a little girl
- **Frida** - An awesome girls name with a great namesake! A great option for so many people. Similar to Freya and has that long e sound
- **Hector** - A strong name with great roots, ends in the -or sound that is so popular
- **Jago** - With J names being so popular for boys, as well as names ending -o, I'm shocked this one isn't way higher in the charts! It could also be a great alternative to Jacob
- **Lori** - One of my favourite girls names! Seems like it ticks so many boxes - slightly masculine, short and sweet. A great honour name for a Laura. Why isn't Lori more popular?
- **Oakes** - A perfect one-syllable nature name that I can't believe I don't see more. I've loved it since seeing Oakes Fedgley's name in the credits of Pete's dragon
- **Sally** - Where are all the little girls named Sally? I can't believe this one is so hard to come by!
- **Stanley** - A gorgeous boys name that feels strong yet gentle, akin to Julian, Henry and Simon
- **Wilson** - One of my top boys names! Fits in with the trends of surname names and names ending -son, and offers a fresh alternative to William
Any theories as to why these names aren't more popular? Perhaps ones like Enid and Jago aren't even known to some people, maybe if they were more well-known they'd shoot up! Maybe a lot of these are on people's short (or long) lists, but just don't make it to actually being chosen
*Surprised I don't like:*
- **Hannah** - Anna is one of my favourite girls names, so I'm not sure why I feel no warmth towards Hannah. I slightly prefer Hanna (although it looks wrong because Hannah is so established), but I don't think the spelling is the issue. Maybe it's a case of association for me
- **Luna** - Such a popular name that is so similar to a lot of names I like! But I just can't get behind it
- **Noah**, **Oliver** and **Ryan** - 3 very popular boys names that for some reason I've just never liked. Noah is my favourite of the 3 but I would never even consider using them. Again, there's nothing inherently wrong with them, so I have no idea why I can't get behind them!
- **Teagan** - I love the nickname "T" which this is perfect for, and there's nothing inherently wrong with it. My theory: I think I don't like e and a together, either ea or ae, but I'm not sure why. I don't like names like Reagan and Nevaeh, or even classics like Michael and Maeve. I adore the name Michaela but the ae puts me off and any other spelling feels wrong. The only exceptions are Beatrice, or names where they are pronounced independently, like in Leah or Thea
- **Wilfred** - I adore the name Wilson, as well as the possible nickname Fred. I think the "Wilf" puts me off. I don't like the nickname Will either but that doesn't stop me from liking Wilson as a full name.
