Pico Laser vs. IPL: Which one actually works for Asian skin? (Pros, Cons & My Honest Advice)

Skin Procedures😶‍🌫️

Hi, just wanted to share this because we get asked this almost every day

“should I do IPL or Pico for dark spots?”

and honestly… a lot of people end up choosing the wrong one, either wasting money or sometimes making pigmentation worse (especially PIH), which is probably the most frustrating part. Here is the honest breakdown for our specific skin type.

The main difference (very simplified)

IPL is more like a flashlight it sends out a broad range of light and heats up the skin overall, so it kind of treats multiple things at once, but not very specifically

Pico is more like a sniper it uses ultra short pulses (picoseconds) to break pigment into tiny particles, more of a mechanical effect rather than heat, so it targets pigment more directly without heating surrounding tissue too much

IPL (pros & cons)

pros:

- cheaper per session

- good for overall tone (mild redness, very superficial spots, dull skin)

- can help with acne bacteria / even hair reduction

cons:

- more risky for asian skin if settings are too high (can trigger pigmentation instead of improving it)

- usually needs quite a lot of sessions (like 5–10)

- not great for deeper pigment or things like melasma

Pico (pros & cons)

pros:

- generally safer for asian skin (less heat → lower risk of PIH)

- faster results, usually fewer sessions needed

- works better for deeper pigment, acne scars, tattoos, overall toning

- minimal downtime (often just redness for a few hours, sometimes a bit longer depending on settings)

cons:

- more expensive per session

- still very operator dependent… wrong settings can still cause issues (so it’s not completely risk free)

So which one should you choose?

this is usually how we guide it:

IPL → if your skin is quite fair, concerns are very mild (like light freckles or dullness), and budget is a factor

Pico → if you have stubborn pigmentation, acne scars, or slightly darker skin tone. in most cases it’s a better long-term option, even if upfront cost is higher

Don’t just go for the cheapest pico deal. The machine matters (there’s a big difference between real devices vs… let’s say not so reliable ones), and also who is doing it, a cheap treatment done poorly is usually where most bad experiences come from tbh

Just sharing based on what we see quite often, not saying one is always better than the other
