How best to deal with a Bracket Ruling Question in EDH?
I was in a Bracket 3 commander event at my LGS when I got a judge call on the legality of my deck at Bracket 3. The event went late and our judge had to leave early, so there was no adjudication to be had. I just decided to not argue and stop the infinite combo I was doing. Yes, I know there's Rule Zero, but how best to adjudicate such disputes as they occur? Like, if I thought my combo was within the definition of Bracket 3, and wouldn't have thought to Rule Zero it until somebody complained.
The Deck in question is an otherwise Bracket 3 [[Fire Lord Ozai]] deck that mostly wins through combat and flashing in big creatures or combat tricks, but as a finisher I put in the Worldgorger loop to generate infinite mana to use Ozai's second ability to exile my opponents' decks. Now by my logic, that's a 3-5 card combo, depending on how you count (my commander, [[Worldgorger Dragon]], [[Animate Dead]], a mana-generating permanent, another creature in grave to stop the loop so I can end my turn), that is also late game bc it requires between 6-12 mana to cast (4 for Ozai, 2 for Animate Dead, 4 for [[Diabolic Tutor]], 2 for [[Unmarked Grave]]). I got the Judge call on turn 8. I could understand if the deck was designed to turbo out the combo as fast as possible, but it is not capable of doing that. It's just a flavor win I have to hard-draw into, or reach with slow tutors. Yes, I know technically I could do the combo first and use the mana to summon Ozai after, but in my deck that's just Christmas.
My opponent based his complaint on the combo's rating (just the worldgorger part, not the Ozai part) on EDHREC, whose ratings seem more based on salt than any objective criterion.
For context, I should say also that the crowd at these events (myself included, admittedly) is very much "technical bracket 3," players who try to build the most degenerate decks they can within the technical limitations of the bracket, and I'm fairly confident my opponent was sharking me, rather than being motivated by a genuine concern for fairness. This is also why "people bitched about it on EDHREC" wouldn't necessarily raise any Rule Zero alarms with this particular group.
Thanks for any help.
