“humble” and “ταπεινός”

Hi, 2nd gen Greek American here. I grew up close to the monasteries in Arizona and Wisconsin. The idea of obedience and turning the other cheek was deeply ingrained within me since a young age. My Theo is a monk and my Yiayia recently went to be a nun… crazy it happened twice…

I have to create a 20 minute long experimental film for my class final. I want to explore the idea of humility and am wondering about the direct translation of ταπεινός in English.

When I feel I get complimented too much, I say “keep me humble”, but noticed native Greek speakers don’t really say “κράτα με ταπεινί”.

From what I understand, ταπεινός means lowly. To cast down to the ground. It’s almost literal.

Any cultural context or breakdown of the word helps me research its meaning and my understanding of my culture. My home :) I am really hoping for some input.

thank you so much.
