Antiviral dosing

I’m curious what dose of antivirals you all take. My derm put me on 500mg every 12 hours for 1 day of the valtrex. My PCP laughed and changed that to 2000mg every 12 hours for 3 days. And then I had a different pcp put me on 1000mg every day for a week! I only had luck with the last two dosages but I’m wondering if anyone has noticed what dose works and isn’t overkill. Or if anyone has noticed side effects from taking large doses! thanks!

(Extra details if they are important: I get 1-3 sores a year, typically on or in my nose, sometimes on my chin. I’ve been doing this dance for 10 years now and I’ve only had the antivirals orally for 1 year. I’ve seen so many doctors because I moved insurance, I don’t have 3 doctors just for fun! Untreated my outbreaks last 2 week and are typically dime to quarter size.)
