My sister is getting verbal harassed at her work place
Hi everyone, I’m writing this on behalf of my sister because she’s really stressed and doesn’t know how to handle her situation. She recently joined Ujjivan Small Finance Bank in pune as a Phone Banking Officer after being clearly told in her interview that her role would focus on customer service and query resolution, with no sales targets involved.
Even her appointment letter doesn’t mention any targets or overtime. She’s still in her probation period and only moved to the floor on the 15th of last month, so this is essentially her first full month working. Despite that, just four days into this month, her team lead has already assigned her a ₹60 lakh sales target.
The surprising part is that she has managed to achieve ₹18 lakh in just four days, but instead of any support or encouragement, she’s being constantly pressured and verbally abused. She’s also being forced to stay logged in beyond her shift hours without any overtime pay. What makes it worse is that her friends in other teams are being told to spend their first three months just learning, with no pressure, so this behavior seems specific to her team lead.
The situation became worse when, in front of the entire floor, her team lead mocked her for taking her legally allowed 15-minute break by saying, “Teko sharam nhi aae break lene ke liye.” Then today, when she logged out after completing her shift, the team lead again tried to publicly humiliate her by saying, “Tu uthi kese aur logout kese kari — chal beth vapas,” but this time my sister stood her ground and calmly said she wouldn’t continue working beyond her hours since she is not paid for overtime and it’s not mentioned in her appointment letter.
This doesn’t feel like normal workplace pressure anymore—it feels like straight-up bullying. She is the sole breadwinner of our family, so quitting without another job isn’t an option right now, but this is taking a serious toll on her mental health. We’re trying to understand what options she has—whether this can be raised with HR, if forcing targets and unpaid overtime like this is even legal, and how she can protect herself without risking her job. Any advice would really mean a lot.
