The story of the new DLC is all over the place
I've got downvoted to hell when I've said this in r/Borderlands4. Guess that's one way to handle any criticism. The writing of Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned is not good from a narrative standpoint. There are two "parallel" plotlines, and while it's heavily implied that their mysteries will be revealed or that they will connect at some point by the end of the game, almost none of them go anywhere and they all end in an unsatisfying way. It's one of the biggest "That's it?" moments I've ever seen.
From the very beginning; Moxxi's refusal to talk about Ellie's father and all those nightmare sequences, it's been implemented like they were somehow related to Ellie's father. But no, Ellie's father turns out to be some random Hodunk guy and had no connections with the current events at all. I still don't understand why Moxxi was hiding that, they dressed it like it was such a big deal and there will be a giant reveal at the end.
Then there's the Captain Willis and his son Robby. Like who are these people? And what is their connection to the story? Throughout the DLC, constant flashback sequences hint that these characters mean something — but nope, they're also just random Dahl people. At the end of the game, when Mancubus teleports into the boss arena and says something suspicious about Robby's role in all of this, I thought: "Oh I see, maybe they're gonna pull "Mancubus and Robby are the same person, and Mancubus has been inviting the Vault Hunters all along to free him from this cursed persona" type of story. But again, no — Robby is just some random kid with a connection to dark forces for some reason because he was stuck in the megalith thing? And Mancubus is taking the kid on as an apprentice so he can look after his magical hotel some day? Okay? There are so many meaningless and random plot points that have nothing to do with each other and don't come together to form a cohesive story.
Also, from the very beginning, a mysterious so-called megalith symbol keeps appearing in the flashback sequences. But by the end of the game, we still never learn what it means. It's just a giant statue in the epicenter of "the vault". It was at this point in the game that I remembered this DLC is called Vault of the Damned. What was that monument? Is that supposed to be a vault? Why was there no vault monster? Why were it giving people nightmares? Who was Willis? Who was Robby? What was Mancubus's goal really? Why was Moxxi hiding the identity of Ellie's father for most mundane reason and what does that have to do with the story? Are we even in Kairos?
And don't get me started on how they put Pickle in all of this and end up killing him (even that's not certain) five minutes later.
The main feature of this DLC is supposed to be mystery, but at the end there was nothing mysterious at all. It's just a giant soup of meaningless events glued together and shipped as a DLC.
C4SH is cool though.
