Do AI generated images qualify as art? (read body text)
I want to specify that I am NOT an AI bro or pro-AI and I try to be as neutral as possible towards all forms of it, but this is just a question that's been on my mind since AI "art" (if you guys would call it that) became a hot topic. As I said, I would say I'm neutral, I find AI fascinating and would like to study machine learning and artificial intelligence someday (even just get to know how it works), but I dislike AI art, find it very lazy, unreliable and unappealing and definitely wouldn't trust a company who uses AI for graphics, texts, ads, etc.
(Before I continue, I want to say that I am talking about whether AI art is art, not whether AI art is someone's art, so either the person's art who wrote the prompt and fed it to AI and or the person who trained the AI with various images.)
That said, I disagree with most opinions about AI art. The most common opinion I've heard is that it isn't art, because art needs to have "a soul". How I understand that is that something needs to be made by a human to be considered art. Now, I don't know if having a prompt written by a human and a human engineering and training the AI counts, but if this opinion also involves thinking AI art is not a valid art form then I think it doesn't make sense. From what I've heard some artists say, anything can be art, be it music, sculptures, photos, movies, literature, or many, many more things. But if that's the case, why wouldn't it include AI art? And if we were to consider AI art a tool (which is also debated), then how would it be different than other tools used to make art? What art actually is is also debated, but I think that if a person sees something as art, then it is art to them. Art is obviously subjective. Some of my questions are probably stupid, if they are just ignore them.
I posted this question here because I didn't want to post it on the mess that is aiwars right now, as it's apparently biased towards AI positivity, but I also wanted to ask the anti-AI folks specifically. I probably forgot to say a lot of things that I think, but I just wanted to hear Your opinions. Please don't kill me.
