Dell's WD SN520 firmware (2024.0012) update tool seems broken. Here's the firmware extracted from it in case anyone goes down the rabbithole I just came from...

Other

I realise this is an old drive, but i figure I'd post this here in case someone runs into the same issue.

Long story short, I had a bunch of SSDs bought at auction and wanted to test/wipe/update the firmware on the lot. Several of them were Dell 2230-sized WD SN520 NVMe drives.

The Dell SN520 firmware utility didn't seem to detect *any* NVMe drive regardless of system/testbed the SSDs were in. Someone else did encounter the same error I found in the log ("...could not capture Dell Component ID") and they were trying to run it on an Acer-provided SN520.

I'm convinced the Dell-provided WD FUT is bugged, but i can't see how, so I might be wrong. Anyway, with the major help of Shelvacu's documentation here, i found it was still applicable and extracted the firmware (located here) and used WD/Sandisk's Dashboard tool to apply the the fw file successfully.

Note: given the signed firmware files, I'm fairly certain you can only apply this to Dell OEM WD drives.
