Is Wano based on a Japanese folk tale? And does that folk tale connect to a real war?
Wano is inspired by feudal Japan — but the Momotaro elements go deeper than most people realize.
Momotaro is one of Japan’s most famous folk tales: a boy born from a peach defeats a demon king on a distant island. Momonosuke, the Scabbards, Onigashima — Oda borrowed this almost directly.
But Momotaro may not be pure fiction. Japan’s oldest chronicles describe a similar conflict in ancient Japan.
The estimated period? The 3rd to 4th century — what Japanese historians call the Blank Century. 147 years where Japan vanishes from the written record.
A blank century. Sound familiar?
Made a video on this. Happy to discuss in the comments.
