Idle thoughts on the art and aesthetic cleverness of Angine and why it works
Not to ruin the magic by deconstruction, but I'm always fascinated by these things, Angine has *it* and I want to understand why
Starting with the visuals, the black / white contrasting dots + strong gold pyramid / triangle geometric relief clearly works. on a bunch of levels.
it's simple enough I can go into MSPAINT right now, and in a couple clicks I can produce something that we will all recognize as AdP. It looks good on everything, three colors (cheap to print) and in my view those colors and shapes = AdP now. basically instantly. 10/10 color and vibe rating.
The aesthetic is functional (blending and shifting focus) but most of all it seems true and representative of the art as a whole. Maybe a bit challenging initially, a little confusing, but ordered and deliberate enough that you can orient yourself and then you're hanging out in that space enjoying the turbo reality together.
Musically, other people have waffled too much about the microtonality and rhythmic complexity, so I just want to say briefly:
It's so, so, so, so rare to find anything truly new in this world, while still being good.
I really like the idea that this combination of sounds and ideas was always there, but it was clearly hard to find, because until now nobody found it. It took cleverness and dedication and the time had to be right, we had to be ready.
They worked for years on something with no guarantee of ever making a splash, now that they've gone viral (sorry, I hate this word) I hope the world treats them well. I've seen what the music business does to art and I desperately hope they stay weird and true and continue to enjoy what they do as artists and as humans.
anyway thanks for coming to by TED talk. happy Saturday to my fellow AdP enjoyers.
