Who benefits from Waymos?

Ask Austin

Are any of y'all benefitting from Waymos in Austin?

Whenever I lived in Austin, TX (2018-late 2024), Waymo training vehicles were driving around my neighborhood in Hyde Park, up and down Duval and 45th, but they weren't providing ride services yet.

The video of a Waymo vehicle blocking emergency vehicles on March 1st of this year while they were responding to the shooting at Buford's on 6th and Nueces is an utter tragedy.

I didn't have a car for 90% of the time I lived in Austin. But, it's a fairly compact city? Ish? I walked or biked a lot of places. Austin Metro's bus system is pretty nice. I slapped a motor on my bike, too (though it wasn't allowed on the bus), but mostly took the bus everywhere and walked everywhere. As weird and sometimes sketchy as the bus can be, the busses got me where I needed to go. I have some outlier tales of public transit failing me, but I tried to factor that possibility into my daily life as much as possible. I was working at an HEB 5 miles away from me, and it was difficult to get to work, sometimes.

Is Waymo a decent option in Austin for folk like me who didn't have vehicles and just needed to get somewhere?

What are some of y'all's experiences with Waymo in Austin?
