Confused Between GRE vs GMAT, MS vs MBA — Need Advice
Hi everyone,
I’m a 25M, married, with ~4 years of experience working as a Data Scientist. My background includes strong hands-on skills in SQL, Python, Excel, ML, and BI tools. I’ve also attempted CFA Level 3 (awaiting results) and am currently preparing for FRM Part 1.
Coming to the dilemma:
- I took the GRE with about a month of prep and scored 314.
- I’ve attempted the GMAT three times, but my scores have consistently been below 595 — I find GMAT significantly tougher compared to GRE.
Now I’m trying to decide my next steps and would really appreciate guidance from this community:
1. MS (Tech) vs MBA
I’m currently more inclined toward pursuing an MS (likely in CS/AI/Tech) in the US. It feels more aligned with my background and long-term belief that tech > MBA in terms of future opportunities.
However, I’ve received feedback that MS programs often offer limited placement support, which is making me second-guess this decision.
2. GRE for MBA?
Since I already have a decent GRE score, I’m wondering — if I later decide to pursue an MBA, is GRE viewed at par with GMAT by top B-schools? Or would I be at a disadvantage?
3. Cost Considerations (Very Important)
Given that I’m married, taking on heavy debt is a big concern.
How should I think about the ROI and cost trade-offs between MS vs MBA in my situation?
Would really appreciate honest advice, especially from people who’ve been in a similar position or have navigated these choices.
Thanks in advance!
