Who is the being supposed to be on the Thing movie poster

G'day

Rookie question here but who is the person in the astronaut style suit mean to be on the Thing movie poster?

It kinda looks like it was meant to be almost a homage to the classic horror movie posters of the 50's.

P.S Love The Thing :) Big Trouble is my all time fav JC film though
