“Belostomo, The Last King of the Depths — a 3-phase soulslike boss with adaptive AI and moral endings”

Advanced Idea

Belostomo — a multi-phase final boss concept for a soulslike game

Hey everyone,

I wanted to share a boss concept I’ve been designing for a soulslike-style game and get feedback from the community.

---

🐚 Belostomo, The Last King of the Depths

A mandatory main-story boss built around the themes of genocide, patience vs brutality, and moral consequence.

The fight is designed to test pattern recognition, positioning, and adaptability rather than pure damage output.

---

⚔️ Core Design Ideas

- 3-phase boss fight

- Heavy emphasis on environmental interaction

- Poison-based pressure system

- Instant-kill grab attacks as high-risk punishment

- Short vulnerability windows (~2 seconds)

- Weak point system based on injured limbs

---

🧠 Phase Breakdown

Phase 1 — Exoskeletal Form

A heavily armored state that teaches the player patience and spacing. Slow but extremely punishing melee attacks, with rare but deadly grab mechanics.

---

Phase 2 — Flooded Domain

The arena becomes partially submerged. The boss gains mobility through water and underwater ambush behavior, including disappearing and reappearing unpredictably. Weak points shift dynamically between limbs.

---

Phase 3 — True Form

The exoskeleton is shed. The boss becomes extremely fast, aerial, and aggressive. Defense is reduced, but pressure and speed increase dramatically. This phase focuses on psychological tension and reaction-based survival.

---

🤖 AI Behavior Concept

The boss is designed to:

- punish repeated player mistakes

- adapt aggression based on player behavior patterns

- feel intelligent, cruel, and reactive rather than scripted

---

📖 Narrative Connection

Belostomo is tied to a larger world story involving an ancient genocide of deep-sea creatures and hidden forces shaping history.

---

🎭 Player Choice Endings

- Execution Ending — Kill Belostomo and align with judgment and control over life and death

- Rebellion Ending — Spare Belostomo and help him oppose the hidden forces behind the world

---

I’d really appreciate any feedback on:

- boss readability

- phase transitions

- overall fairness vs difficulty balance

- and whether the concept feels engaging as a soulslike encounter

Thanks for reading!
