My pet African soft fur, Oatmeal, was housed with my other pet ASF, Honey, because Honey had escaped from her previous enclosure and I didn’t have any backups. Honey got pregnant and they enjoyed being together so I decided that until Honey had her pups, they would be together. Unfortunately Oatmeal’s original cage mates had passed away from cancer (we had to put her to sleep), and from her intestines shutting down from old age. He only had one friend left, besides the temporary bunch. This last one passed away from an illness that we didn’t think was too serious while Honey, Oatmeal, and Honey’s friends, were together. Weeks went by and six cute little pups were born. I separated Oatmeal from the others for a few days and he was devastated.

I made a post on a mouse forum and someone suggested that I adopt a new friend for Oatmeal. I decided that it wasn’t too bad of an idea, went to the pet shop, and adopted a female feeder mouse. I named her Nutella. I thought she would be friendly because I adopted friendly ones from the same pet shop before. I was very wrong. When I arrived at my home, I tried to let her sniff me but she was TERRIFIED! She almost jumped off the bed but luckily I caught her. I put her in her new enclosure and she wasn’t scared of Oatmeal which is good. I have been trying so hard to bond with her but she is just so scared! At least today she let me put my hand near her, which means she is kind of getting used to me? How do I create a bond with her, without stressing her out too much?

How do I get her to trust me?
