can’t reverse my car lol

So I just got the game today, I’m playing on steam with my Xbox controller connected. I got everything else working just fine, but when I try to reverse (yes I do have the button mapped correctly) it goes reallllyyyy slow. But I just started the appointed defender mission, and I cannot reverse vehicles at ALL. Which is bad because I just started the game and I crash a lot💀 am I missing something? Thank you in advance.
